Urban mermaid

dress: vintage | belt: thrifted | shoes: Charlotte Russe

Ready for my nerdy little secret? I definitely themed this outfit around The Little Mermaid. Yes, the Disney movie. I re-dyed my hair recently (sorry, it's true - I'm not a natural redhead!) and it was so vibrant that it reminded me of a more true-to-life version of Ariel's hair...which would pretty much be a dream come true for my two-year-old self. I was utterly obsessed with The Little Mermaid when I was that age. Everything I owned had to have Ariel on it, and I would run around the house singing the songs, all the while wishing I had a mermaid tail. I don't know if I was just a brave kid or what, but my niece and nephew (ages 4 and 3) just watched it for the first time, and were apparently terrified of Ursula. My mom says I didn't even bat an eyelash at her.

Anyway, this dress has always reminded me of the sea; it shimmers, and has little pleated accents that remind me of fins. So finally I decided to embrace it and go as full-on Ariel as I could without donning a seashell bra. I don't think that would have gone over too well at work...

This past week has been a little bit insane, but even though I've been longing for some down time, I'm glad to be so busy. I submitted my latest column this morning, and now I get to start brainstorming for the January issue. I've been put in charge of a special DIY section...how fun is that? So, for the next few weeks, I'll be scouring the web for simple DIYs to complete, photograph, and write about. This will all be on top of my normal 40-hour-a-week job, but I'm hopeful that I'll have some awesome stuff to share by the end of it all! Does anyone know of any awesome websites with DIYs I should look into?

I've been coming up a bit short on sleep these past few days, so I think I'm going to call it a night. Thanks for all of the kind comments on my new layout - I read and appreciated every one!

  4. Hah, I'm not a natural redhead either, but once you go red, you can't go back. ;) The little mermaid was one of my favorite movies as well growing up, I think almost every girl in our generation wanted to be Ariel when that came out! I totally love your dress here, it's sort of a re-imagined shirt-dress and is quite lovely.

PS- the red hair completely suits you, you look lovely as a redhead!

  5. I love Disney princesses to this day! It's so embarrassing. Haha... I really like the header on your blog. It's very sweet!

I love the red hair. I wish I could dye my hair red but 1) my stylist would hate me and 2) my work would fire me. :(

  16. Just looking at that first picture, I had the urge to ask if you colored your hair, not because it looks colored but because I absolutely love your red! Being a natural blonde who is currently masquerading as a brunette, red was going to be my next coif color adventure. What color did you use, if you don't mind sharing? :)

  20. okay i get a wee bit over excited when i see something this good come to life! Laura, your amazing hair color with that gorgeous blue dress and those sparkling green eyes of yours against the almost matching backdrop is a total WOW moment in time!!!! stunning is what. love that you themed this around Ariel, that is too sweet! you hit the mark and then some.

here's hoping you get to chill out a bit more in the coming weeks, sounds like you've had to balance a whole lot and man do i ever know the toll that can take. good for you though, it's apparent how much you love what you do! ♥

  21. I always love when my hair is freshly dyed too! It's so super vibrant for a few days. I think it's so fun that we have the faux red head thing in common. We both must just have the right coloring for it! People think I've always been a red head. Although its been red for over 8 years so it seems like always.
Also, I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid when I was little too! I think I watched it every single day when I was around 3. I still love it. Ursula never scared me back then. I can't really think of any cartoon that scared me. I think kids these days are really wimpy that's all!
